My Favorite Things

Mention “My Favorite Things” and my mind goes immediately to Julie Andrews and The Sound of Music. Then, it leaps right over the Austrian Alps to Oprah Winfrey’s annual list of holiday gift recommendations.

I can’t say that I’ve ever purchased anything from Oprah’s list, and I don’t see myself grabbing this year’s $64 gift set of rice crispies; however, I am grateful for the inspiration Oprah provides by sharing her thoughtful selections.

If you happen to be looking for additional gift ideas, I invite you to consider Missy’s Favorite Things:

1.      Nonprofit organizations serving our community

2.      Charitable giving

My favorite things come in all shapes (cash, appreciated stock) and sizes. Returns are never an issue because your charitable investment promises to deliver great dividends.

From what I know about our community’s nonprofit organizations, there’s something for everyone on your list.

The needs are great. In just over a year, we’ve awarded more than $2.9 million toward $8.4 million in requests! And that’s just health-related needs.

Once you select an organization to receive your contribution, you simply notify your friend or loved one that you’ve made a gift in their honor – or you can request that the organization notifies that person (without sharing the gift amount, of course).

Gift giving has the added benefit of improving your health. When you make a gift, your brain secretes “feel good” chemicals, and you may also experience lower levels of cortisol (stress hormone) and lower blood pressure.

You can experience the benefits of giving beyond the holidays. The organizations serving those in need in our community would be equally grateful to receive your charitable support in January, February, March, etc.

There’s never a wrong time to make the right gift.

Whether you find the perfect gift on Oprah’s list or mine, I hope your gift-giving season brings you great joy.

Happy Holidays!
